VOLUNTEER
It Takes a Community to Make Christmas Happen
The Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund depends on volunteers to make Christmas brighter for children throughout Bartholomew County. Whether you’re an individual, a family, a business or an organization, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Support a fundraising event, join us for a Boxing Day, bring a group to sort toys or assemble bicycles, or join us for our biggest day of the year - Delivery Day! Every volunteer plays an important role in making the season special. Interested in helping? Sign up through the United Way Volunteer Portal or complete the volunteer form below.
BOXING DAYS
HELP US SHOP FOR CHRISTMAS
Boxing Days give volunteers the opportunity to shop for children using the Cheer Fund’s very own toy store, stocked with a wide variety of new toys. When you arrive, you’ll receive a shopping list with the names of the children in a family and the gifts each child has requested. We want every child to receive toys and characters they’re excited about!
Volunteers take a shopping cart through the store to select each child’s gifts. Every child receives 2 books, 3 stocking stuffers, 1 ball or plush item and 5 toys. Each family also receives a game, and any child who requests a bicycle receives one, too.
Once shopping is complete, volunteers pack the gifts into a box. Our Cheer Fund team labels and organizes each box so it’s ready for Delivery Day.
A few things to know:
Individuals and families must sign up through the United Way Volunteer Portal.
Please sign up for one evening only so we can make room for as many volunteers as possible.
No shopping experience required - just a little Christmas spirit!

DELIVERY DAY
Always the 2nd saturday in december
Delivery Day is when all the planning, shopping and preparation come together - and the excitement is contagious! Santa and Mrs. Claus make their appearance, and volunteers gather outside the Cheer Fund doors, eagerly waiting for them to open at 8 a.m. Once the doors open, volunteers pull into the building, where our Cheer Fund Elves load their cars, trucks and vans with boxes of Christmas gifts. Have a truck or trailer? You may get the privilege of delivering bicycles!
Once your vehicle is loaded, an Elf will give you a delivery sheet with the addresses for your route. Take the gifts to each home and hand them directly to an adult. If no one is home or answers the door, return the box to the Cheer Fund building. When you've finished your route, come back to confirm your deliveries. If more deliveries are available, you can head out again and keep sharing the cheer!
